‘Studientage Improvisation’ - ‘Mini-Symposia’
More than in other practical musical subjects, improvization challenges the musician as well as promoting creativity. The whole spectrum of musical knowledge comes into play. For this reason, improvization tends to play an intermediary role between the individual disciplines of musical training at the SCB. Aside from the practical examination of specific problems of ‘playing without a score’, a dialogue between and among the instructors and the students is a central part of the STUDIENTAGE IMPROVISATION. The themes of the past years are just a few examples of the spectrum of questions on style-related improvization that have been treated:
- 2001 Sequence of descending fifths
- 2002 Old keys (tonalities)
- 2003 Modulation
- 2004 Toccata
- 2005 Fugue
- 2006 Choral and variation
- 2007 Improvization and Dance
- 2008 a Schola Symposium on improvization practise
- 2009 Cliché
- 2010 Rhetorics
The program STUDIENTAGE IMPROVISATION demonstrates the work of the ‘Forschungsgruppe Basel für Improvisation’ (FBI) by means of concerts, lectures, workshops, and a round-table discussion at the end. It is an open ‘playing field’ for encounters and exchanges of ideas on the fascinating subject of improvized music.
