Bachelor of Arts in Music

Candidates who are following a course of studies in music for the first time at an institute of higher learning (‘Hochschule’) should apply for the program Bachelor of Arts in Music.
Duration: 3 years
180 credit points (ECTS)

The BA is artistically oriented and is not evaluated as a degree which qualifies candidates for professional life. In general the knowledge and experience attained in this program is deepened and extended  by continuing studies in the Master’s Degree program.However, in the Bachelor’s program one does gain experience and abilities which can be combined with other professional branches (music journalism, publishing, music management, instrument-making, etc.) This degree does not include any training in musical pedagogy: there is a special Master’s Degree for this purpose.The BA program is divided into two historical periods, Medieval/Renaissance (8th-16th centuries) and Renaissance/Romantic (16th-19th centuries), similar in  structure but with differences in the focus of the content.


Admission requirements
  • In general, not younger that 17 or older than 25 years old.
    A completed middle school education (Matura, Abitur, Baccalauréat, High School Diploma) or similar.
  • Above average musical ability, aptitude in general as well as in the major subject, basic knowledge of music theory.
  • Sufficient knowledge of the German language (the official teaching language at the SCB is German.)
  • A medical certificate indicating  no major health problems.
  • Successful entrance exam.
